The underpinnings of script/server have been simplified and rewritten somewhat. The explicit list of supported servers that used to be in script/server is gone. Instead, Rails now depends on the installation of Rack, and script/server goes through this – which means that Rails supports any server that Rack does.

I am someone who is highly motivated by ideas. So, it pains me to say that the value of an iPhone application idea right now is pretty much zero. A great idea isn’t worth anything under these conditions. There is no shortage of great iPhone ideas, just a shortage of talent to bring these ideas to market.

Didn’t make it to Rubyconf? Or maybe you missed a few talks? Well here you go, the entire event in 31 minutes. This video contains links to the Full Confreaks Videos, so if you see something you like, you can go view the entire video. Warning: Not all the Confreaks videos are posted yet, so if you click the links in the video some may not be up. See the Confreaks Video page for a list of videos which are posted (the ones that are linked). (via Rails Envy: Rubyconf Videos)

The bottom line is that finding customers for your application isn’t a technical problem, and a technical solution isn’t going to fix it. It is a marketing problem, and it requires marketing to fix it. Since developers can’t count on Apple doing the marketing, they need to do it themselves. I know that’s scary news to those of us who have only ever been engineers, but we need to acknowledge it and work through it.

it really kicks off into lunacy around the 1.50 mark. But I would like you to watch the whole thing. Because it really is one of those “fall of Western culture” moments. It’s a near-perfect snapshot of everything that’s shit about this point in the culture.

Tell me more about this passive aggressive thing, though. Do I have to have a deep hidden agenda, a long-standing personal beef or an ulterior motive in order to simply call a guy Hannah Montana?

So, look, Ruby is a crazy fun language (for some) and perhaps nothing more. You can get away with things that are heresy elsewhere. Maybe it’s an irresponsible language. A flimsy language. I don’t know, sheriff. The business world has its ideas about perfection. Maybe Ruby doesn’t take itself as seriously as the business world does.

If, after all these years, Ruby isn’t going to take itself seriously, then should I bother taking myself seriously either?
